| I
use junk metal in my work. I enjoy the interesting shapes
and like to change them into new objects giving them a different
slant and a touch of humour.
I
think it all started with my mum showing me an old cog she’d
found on the moors. The fact that these sorts of things were
lying around out there waiting to be found left a lasting
impression on me.
At
art college the first thing I tried my hand at was welding.
Some wierd kid hogged the welder all year on my foundation
course so when I got to Leeds Polytechnic I made a beeline
for the welder and have done nothing else since.
The
materials budget ran out fairly soon into the course so the
only way to keep making metal sculpture was to go looking
for that discarded metal. I soon discovered it was everywhere.
The
larger sculptures are made from a mixture of fire extinguishers,
tanks, tubing, engineering bits and some new metal. The shapes
of the junk metal often suggest what the sculpture should
be. |
