Harry Ousey       1915 -1985                                                                                                                                  Back

"In the early years of this century, one of the founders of abstract painting, Wassily Kandinsky, queried what was to replace the missing object in art in which there was no representing of the visible world. The answer was that the primary object became the inner experience of the artist.

"When one is so much a part of the landscape, as I am,and when one feels a great attachment to it,then some form of its presence must flowt hrough the brush, palette knife or as so often the case, just my fingers"                   Harry Ousey

Harry Ousey enjoyed the simple and unspoiled things in life - the wide expansive landscapes of Cornwall, Derbyshire and Southern France, where he coould walk in isolation with his wife,Susie.  On such strolls he would collect ideas for his abstract paintings, observing the shapes of drifting clouds, the patterns of dry-stone walls ,the flow of water and the colour and scent of wild flowers. On one such morning he recorded eighty-two wild plants in flower in about an acre of ground on the Lizard in Cornwall. Such reflection enriched the qualiy of his art which ranks alongside the highest achievments of the St Ives Scool.

Harry Ousey's work is attracting the critical recognition it so richly deserves.  His artis represented in important collections at Chatsworth House, Whitworth Art Gallery,Manchester, and Buxton Museum and Art Gallery.  Falmouth Art Gallery now houses the most important public collection of his work.

Abstraction releases an artist from the need to render the world realistically, but also makes its own demands in terms of colour, volume and space.  When colour, form and movement come together in a wholly attractive unity, Harry Ousey achieves an irresistable success in his work that cannot be lightly set aside.
